Scuba Diving in Baja:
The Sea of Cortez offers a warm water Pacific Ocean diving experience in our backyard, Baja California Sur. It is filled with over 800 species of marine life from damsel fish and Cortez Angelfish to hammerheads, giant mantas and whale sharks. There are day boats which visit the always thrilling sea lion rookery at the Isla Los Islotes arch. And for liveaboard addicts and novice divers alike there are week long trips to the many great and diverse sites around the islands. The Sea of Cortez really does have a magical quality about it and pleasant marine life surprises are common.
The variety of diverse sites give you the opportunity to see much of what the Sea of Cortez has to offer. At the El Bajo seamount, an underwater mountain range, schooling scalloped hammerhead sharks are the main attraction. For reasons still unknown they are constant visitors at this sea mount. This "parade of dinosaurs" can come from any direction out of the blue and disappear as quietly as they have arrived. Be quiet and still or you'll scare them away. At Los Islotes you will encounter the most friendly and accessible sea lions on earth. It is not unusual to feel a tug on your fin and see a new pup playing with it. The diving there is shallow and the only reason to finish your dive is because you run out of air. Since you never quite feel like you have seen all there is to see at a site it is always hard to move to the next one.
The trips are run on board the custom-built 80' DON JOSE. The ship has 7 staterooms and accommodates up to 16 divers per trip. The trips are 8 days which includes arrival and departure day and 5½ days of diving. Trips begin and end in La Paz. The season is June-September to take advantage of the warmer water season.
Trip Cost: $1,750 deluxe room, main deck and $1,550 standard room and upper deck.
